Typing with your voice on a Mac pays off anywhere speech beats the keyboard — emails, notes, messages and longer drafts. The real questions are how to dictate accurately, privately, and so the text lands exactly where you're typing.
macOS has dictation built in (turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, usually triggered by double-tapping Control or Fn). It's free and fine for short input. Limits: weaker punctuation and jargon, no smart text edits, no personal dictionary.
For daily work, a tool with a modern model (e.g. Whisper) and insert-anywhere via a hotkey is worth it. What to look for:
Partner Voice lives in your menu bar. Click into any field, press the hotkey (default ⌥M), speak — and the transcribed, optionally polished text is inserted straight into the app. Transcription runs on-device (via Whisper on Apple Silicon), so audio stays with you. Your dictionary and settings sync to iPhone through Partner ID.
It's free to download — try voice typing on your Mac.
